Can I bring my maid for an overseas trip?

There’s no reason for you not to bring your maid for an overseas trip. But there are a few points to bear in mind before you get the tickets.

1. Visa Application

Check with the immigration department of the country that you’re traveling about the appropriate visa for your maid. You’ll want to get the correct visa to avoid her being detained at the immigration check. Some countries provide short-term visas for maids who are accompanying their employers for a visit.

2. Insurance

It is your obligation to ensure that your maid is adequately insured when you’re bringing her for travel. Confirm with your insurance agency that the policy remains effective even when she’s not in Hong Kong.

3. Salary

According to the Standard Employment Contract, your maid is only allowed to carry out her duties in your residence. This means that she won’t be working while accompanying you on an overseas trip. Despite that, you’ll still need to reimburse her salary in full.

4. Notify Your Agency

It’s prudent to notify your agency if you intend to bring your maid for a trip. Besides being responsible for your maid’s safety and whereabouts, the agency may also advise you on other procedures or documentation that may be needed.
